The original pub was built in 1642 out of Northants ironstone, although has been added to in a piecemeal fashion over the years leaving it on different levels. This is evidenced with the low door lintel and three steps between the upper and lower bars, lounge and games room. The pub was originally called the Sun Inn, although was changed some 20 years ago to the Rowell Charter Inn to commemorate the granting of the Charter by King John in 1204 to hold a market and fair in the town each year. The pub opens at six on the Monday morning of the fair, the Bailiff of Rothwell rides out and reads out the proclamation opening the fair. The Charter holds a beerfest on this week; the rest of the year eight beers including local ales are on offer with two real ciders proving very popular. A local CAMRA Pub of the Season winner.
